Korean Scalp Shading for Hair Loss

Scalp Shading - widely popularized as 'Scalp Painting' is a trending, semi-permanent cosmetic treatment designed to camouflage thinning hair and widening parts. It acts as a long-lasting alternative to messy topical hair fibers or root concealing powders.

While scalp shading shares the same goals and appearance results as Scalp MicroPigmentation, the equipment, depth, equipment, technique, and longevity are entirely different.

Instead of mimicking distinct, individual hair follicules using deep, pixelated permanent dots, scalp painting applies an ultra-fine layered matrix of dots to create a soft, diffused shadow backdrop on the scalp skin.

EPIDERMAL DEPTH

The pigment is deposited exclusively into the shallow epidermal layer of the skin rather than the deeper dermal layers. This shallow placement prevents the ink from spreading or turning blue over time.

LAYERING vs. POINTILLISM
The scalp shading technique relies on micro-needling tools or specialized PMU cartridges to shade broad, see-through gaps, instantly neutralizing the high contrast and tell-tale reflection of light off light skinned scalp skin where the density of hair follicles is reduced.

MINIMAL TRAUMA
The procedure causes minimal to no bleeding, zero downtime, and bypasses the scabbing associated with traditional cosmetic tattoos.

LONGEVITY / DURATION OF THE EFFECT
Shading - 6 month to 1 yr
SMP - 3-6+ years

ADVANTAGES OF SCALP SHADING

  • No long term regrets. The pigment breaks down and metabolizes over 12-24 months. The color fades 100% naturally. If a client's hair turns gray, there will be no mismatched pigment.

  • Shading is efficient. A typical session can cover a widening part line in about 1 hr, making it much faster than a multi-hour SMP session.

  • It is immediate gratification. The result appear right away. It camouflages hormonal hair loss, post-partum shedding, or genetic thinning by filling in the see-through spaces between existing hair strands.

Choose your SMP & SCALP STAIN practitioner carefully. It is a specialized art and skill. There are plenty examples of botched and subpar RESULTS on social media.

IS SCALP STAINING SUITABLE FOR WOMEN WITH HAIR LOSS/THINNING?
Yes! Hair loss in women, even younger women appears to be more common. Diet, stress, bleaching/coloring, traction from tight braids, and hormone changes may contribute but more research needs to be done to better understand the problem. Scalp Staining is very appropriate for women who desire the appearance of increased hair density and it can help with the visual improvement and we can help create density of the thinning area.
